NEW
ATTENDANCE TRACKING
During
the next
week or so you will be getting a letter signed by our school
district’s Student Support Services Coordinator, Theresa
Garner,
who will be updating you regarding the new attendance tracking
regulations.
The letter will be
placed on the Vista
website as well. (See the
letter here) Vista
is fortunate that our parents understand
the correlation between regular attendance and excellent grades. All unexcused absences will now be
classified as “truant”. The state of California
does not differentiate
between unexcused and truant. A student
will also be considered truant if they are more than 30 minutes late to
class for unexcused reasons. Three tardies
will equal 1 TRUANT. Excused
absences are absences cleared from a
parent or guardian for the following reasons: student illness, student
medical appointment, student attending a funeral for a close family
member, and when making a court appearance. Absences
for family emergencies may be excused ONLY when a parent submits a
written request one week prior to the anticipated absence and receives
approval from the school. Absences
for family vacations cannot be excused.
Letters will begin to be
automatically sent to parents of students who have truancies and
excessive absences.

NEW!!
Kindergarten parents: Please park on
the
street to
drop off and pick –up your students in the morning and in the
afternoon. The
SVPD will no longer allow
parents to park in
the red zone and get out to walk
their
child to the kindergarten area. Do not
double-park
in front of the K area. If you need to
talk to the teacher please park on
the street and then walk on to campus to communicate with your
child’s teacher. The
big
idea is to keep the traffic moving in the front parking lot. If you are
in the front lot your child must be actively loading or unloading.

Keys
Emotional
Intelligence
|
A child’s
Emotional Intelligence (EQ) helps them become more successful in life. Children with high EQ are better problem
solvers, are less impulsive, are better motivated, have better attention
spans, and are liked by their peers. Here’s how you can help: pay attention
to your child’s physical/verbal cues; teach self-calming skills (what to do
when a person feels upset- hold a stuffed animal, sing, count, breathe
deeply; allow children to identify their emotions – help them to find the
words to describe their emotions; reduce television viewing as it is a
passive activity and may cause anxiety, fearfulness, or encourage disruptive
behavior (depending on what is being watched on t.v.); give accurate, honest
praise (excessive, lavish unearned praise) does not allow students to know
their strengths and weaknesses; teach problem solving (give students time
to resolve their own problems); model empathy (especially important to
maintaining friendships); set clear limits and enforce them consistently;
allow students to suffer the consequences of their actions; and teach
students ways to cope with life’s stress (it’s ok for students to see their
parents sad [cry] help them with expressing their sadness using words. (www.familymagazinegroup.com)
